The 10 men of Kilmarnock suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to Rangers at The BBSP Stadium, Rugby Park on Wednesday, 18 January 2023.
It was Kilmarnock who opened the scoring on a crisp night under the floodlights. Chris Stokes rose highest to meet a Danny Armstrong corner which resulted in the home side taking a deserved lead after 6 minutes.
Killie bombarded the Rangers box for the opening quarter of an hour before the visitors got a foothold on possession. An equaliser came just after the 20 minute mark when Fashion Sakala’s cross found Alfredo Morelos who converted at the back post.
Rangers were quickest out of the changing room, taking the lead six minutes after the restart through Ryan Kent’s effort which found the bottom corner.
Killie’s hopes of a fightback took a blow when Danny Armstrong received a second yellow card following an incident involving a Rangers defender deep inside the away team’s half. The game looked all but over when Alfredo Morelos doubled his tally with 20 minutes left on the clock.
Joe Wright gave Killie a lifeline with five minutes to play when he struck a thunderous volley which crashed into the top corner. Derek McInnes’s side fought forward in search of an equaliser in the final moments, but the 10 men were held off by the Rangers defence.
