Linfield 2 Kilmarnock 3
A lively and competitive pre-season clash in Northern Ireland saw Killie edge out Linfield 3–2 in an end-to-end encounter packed with chances, momentum swings, and late drama.
First Half
Kilmarnock started brightly and took an early lead on 10 minutes. Cole Coughlin finished off a well-worked move involving Tyreece John-Jules and Ruari Ellis, giving Killie a deserved advantage after a sharp attacking sequence.
Shortly after, Roshaun Mathurin was fouled on the edge of the box, and the resulting free kick was converted to double Kilmarnock’s lead, putting them firmly in control early on.
Linfield responded on 15 minutes, pulling one back to reduce the deficit and shift momentum. From there, the home side grew into the game.
Rory McKenzie came close on 18 minutes, controlling a cross well with his chest from Mathurin’s delivery, but couldn’t convert. Linfield then threatened at the other end when former Kilmarnock man Adam Frizzell whipped a dangerous ball across the box, though no finishing touch followed.
On 27 minutes, Linfield nearly equalised, but Callum Ferrie produced an excellent save to preserve Kilmarnock’s lead.
Before the break, Mathurin continued to cause problems, delivering another dangerous cross that Tyreece John-Jules met with a powerful header, only for the Linfield goalkeeper to claim it. Mathurin also tested the keeper himself with a shot from distance, which was comfortably gathered.
Second Half
Linfield came out strongly after the interval, with their number 9 going close on 53 minutes but firing wide.
At 60 minutes, a floated cross forced Max Stryjek into a strong save down to his left, and moments later Linfield struck the crossbar in what was their closest effort yet.
Kilmarnock weathered the pressure, with Stryjek again called into action on 72 minutes to tip a free kick over the bar.
Linfield eventually found their equaliser on 73 minutes through number 24, bringing the match level at 2–2.
Kilmarnock responded immediately. On 77 minutes, Greg Kiltie capitalised on a defensive error to restore the lead, finishing clinically to make it 3–2.
Drama continued at 80 minutes when Linfield were awarded a penalty, but Max Stryjek produced a superb diving save to his right to keep Kilmarnock ahead.
The visitors managed the closing stages effectively and held on to secure a hard-fought 3–2 victory.
