Robbie Deas: We know we can be better

Robbie Deas says Kilmarnock aren’t looking to blame anyone for their results this season other than themselves.

The defender knows it’s a case of fine margins, he says they’ve shot themselves in the foot a number of times – but he knows the squad has what it takes to turn it round.

And now with a tricky test away to Dundee coming up, he’s hoping the side can rectify it and pick up their first three points of the season and head into the international break on a high.

Deas said: “Do we need a bit more luck? Possibly, but at the same time it’s our own doing. You can’t just hope on luck to get the result.

“We put ourselves in a position of being 3-1 up at home. We should have seen out the game and we didn’t at the end of the day and that’s our own fault.

“It felt like a defeat. To be 3-1 up at home and then lose two goals like how we did, it felt like a defeat and it’s not good enough.

“We set our standards so high last year and to do what we’ve done wasn’t good enough.

“The mood was extremely disappointed and annoyed but we’ve got to look at ourselves for that, it’s down to us at the end of the day.

“It was three goals that we could easily have dealt with and we’ve already looked back and spoke about it as a team so we just need to move on now and learn from it.”

Deas insists the fact Killie haven’t won a league game yet isn’t a dark cloud hanging over the dressing room – it’s a case of taking it one game at a time and focusing on the next match.

He said: “No it’s not a ‘thing’, we’re just looking at the next game. The next game is the biggest game, as the old cliche is.

“If you look at our performances we’ve played well in quite a few games so far this season, we’ve just not got that result.

“Of course we’re looking for our first three points, so it’s not in the back of our minds but it’s what we need.

“We need to go and kick on the rest of the season and look at what we can achieve like we did last year.”

On Dundee, Deas is expecting a tough test: “Dundee, you look at how well they’ve done last year and maybe how unlucky they were not to finish higher than what they did. They always seem to give us a tough game.

“You look at our past few results, it’s always really tight. As we said, the next game is the biggest game and it’s Dundee and we need to get the three points and they’re the exact same.”

Meanwhile, Deas has been full of praise for David Watson after bagging a brace last week, and after he was called up to Scotland’s Under 21s side alongside Bobby Wales.

He said: “David’s a great boy, he’s a great player and he fully deserves getting called up. You look at what he comes on and does in the second half, he gets us ahead straight away in the first 10-15 minutes.

“He just shows you what he’s capable of and hopefully he can kick on and hopefully he can get started for the under-21s and keep putting performances like he has.”
