Match report: Copenhagen (H)
Kilmarnock exited Europe after a spirited draw against FC Copenhagen.
The Ayrshire took the lead against last season’s Champions League knockout stage qualifiers, only to be undone by an own goal which gave the Danish side a 3-1 aggregate victory.
After a goalmouth scramble and blocks off the line eventually the ball found the net to give Killie the lead after 16 minutes courtesy of Marley Watkins at the back post, and Rugby Park’s crowd was rocking.
Kieran O’Hara pulled off an incredible save after 34 minutes when captain Viktor Claesson looked sure to head in the equaliser, but the shot stopper at full stretch kept it out.
A minute later Denis Vavro had a speculative shot from distance, it went narrowly wide much to O’Hara’s relief.
O’Hara then pulled off another vital save just before the half-time whistle blue as Kevin Diks fizzed a shot at goal with venom.
Vavro tried his luck from distance again in the 65th minute, O’Hara had to get down low to save the shot from distance.
Copenhagen drew level after 68 minutes when Lewis Mayo turned the ball into his own net.
Tried as they might, it just wasn’t to be for Killie who pushed hard to get back into the tie, but ultimately it was a challenge too far on the night.
