Luke Chambers: U20 World Cup excusal request shows ‘maturity’

Derek McInnes was left impressed by the “maturity” of Luke Chambers after the young full-back asked to be excluded from England’s U20 World Cup campaign to support the club’s end of season battle.

The 18-year-old had been called-up to represent his nation at the tournament in Argentina, which kicks off this weekend.

Speaking ahead of the St Johnstone match, McInnes said: “It’s a significant tournament, the World Cup in Argentina, with England being one of the favourites to go down there and try to win it. It would have been a great experience, but he had no hesitation. We need him more than England at the minute.”

Outlining the reason behind his decision, Chambers commented: “It was a great opportunity to go away with England, but we’ve got three really important games that I need to help in. I don’t think I would have felt good going away and leaving the lads in the position that we are. It was definitely the right decision and I’ve got no regrets.”
