Donnelly a man of his word, says McInnes

Derek McInnes has revealed that Liam Donnelly turned down a more lucrative offer to remain at Rugby Park, having given the manager his word at the end of last season.

Speaking on Tuesday, McInnes said: “We feel that Liam at his best has got so much to offer us. I think he’s a really talented midfielder and we’re keen to have someone in that role: he’s a bit more connected to the back lot and has that defensive edge.

“It has taken a bit longer to get Liam than we would have liked. Selfishly as football managers and clubs, you always want to get the players in ‘here and now’ but they have a lot to consider: not everybody knows about players’ family circumstances.

“He thought long and hard, but what he had said to me 6 weeks ago was that if he was staying in Scotland he would be signing for us. Even up until this week, there was a club in Scotland offering far more money to sign him.

“I’m really pleased that we’ve managed to get him. The disappointing aspect is that he’s behind everybody else, but we sign players for the full season and not just for the first part. If we can get him on the pitch more and he stays injury free, he’s definitely an asset to us.”

Liam has signed up: now it’s your turn! More than 4,500 of the Blue and White Army have committed for the 2023/24 campaign. Secure your Season Ticket – HERE.
