John Wilson Appointed as Disability Liaison Officer
Kilmarnock Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of John Wilson as the club’s new Disability Liaison Officer.
John steps into the role with a deep personal connection to the club and the Kilmarnock FC Disabled Supporters Association. He succeeds the late Peter Orr, whose dedication and commitment left a lasting impact on so many within the Killie family.
Mae Orr and Ann Broomhall will continue to support the role, alongside John’s wife Lindsay, ensuring continuity and experience remain at the heart of the DSA’s work.
Speaking following his appointment, John said:
“I am honoured and immensely proud to have been appointed as the new Disability Liaison Officer at Kilmarnock FC. I hope to carry on the great work that our late good friend Peter Orr had been doing for such a long time with his wife Mae and close friend Ann. Thankfully, Mae and Ann will still be here to support me as I find my feet in what is an important role supporting our DSA members.”
John’s connection with Ayrshire’s finest stretches back to the late 1980s, when Jim Fleeting was manager at Rugby Park. While family life and work commitments meant he could not always attend matches regularly, his bond with the club was strengthened when he met his wife Lindsay, a lifelong Killie supporter.
After Lindsay was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, attending matches became increasingly challenging. The support of the Disabled Supporters Association proved transformative.
John explained:
“When Lindsay’s condition progressed and the stairs in the Frank Beattie Stand became a real struggle, we were introduced to Peter and the DSA. Peter arranged a seat in the ambulant section for us and, at the start of this season, due to further deterioration in Lindsay’s condition, we were offered a space on the wheelchair platform. Without the help and support of the DSA, attending matchdays would have been very difficult, if not impossible.”
That first-hand experience of the difference the DSA can make inspired John to get involved more directly. With a professional background in customer care and health and safety, and a strong understanding of disability and the challenges supporters can face, he is determined to build on the strong foundations already in place.
He added: “After seeing the benefit of being part of the DSA, I believe I can do the KFCDSA proud. I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can in the coming weeks and continuing to make the BBSP Stadium one to be proud of for being accessible and inclusive for all.”
Everyone at Kilmarnock FC welcomes John into his new role and looks forward to working together to ensure Rugby Park remains a welcoming and inclusive environment for every supporter.
