Kilmarnock were knocked out of the Premier Sports Cup in heartbreaking fashion as St Mirren secured a semi-final spot on penalties.
Greg Kiltie had a great chance after just two minutes as he burst through before firing a low shot from distance, Shamal George did well to keep it out.
Mikael Mandron tried his luck from 25 yards, his low shot was creeping towards the bottom corner, but Max Stryjek saved well.
Greg Kiltie went incredibly close after 12 minutes, his curling effort looked to be heading into the corner but it was narrowly wide.
St Mirren took the lead after 25 minutes as Mikael Mandron got the better of Lewis Mayo before firing home a powerful effort.
Killie fired themselves level just before half-time as a powerful header from Robbie Deas flew past George in the Saints goal to bring the tie level.
It was an absolutely incredible save from Max Stryjek in the 54th minute as a powerful shot looked sure to hit the back of the net, but the Polish stopper somehow tipped it onto the crossbar.
Jayden Richardson scored a volley from 20 yards on the hour mark to restore Saints’ lead and make it 2-1.
Marcus Dackers had a great chance in the 68th minute as his glancing header was on target, but George did well to save.
Killie were handed a golden opportunity to equalise four minutes from time when Marley Watkins was brought down in the box – Bruce Anderson then stepped up to smash home the penalty and make it 2-2 after 86 minutes.
Extra-time then fizzled out which led to penalties – and that went Saints’ way with a 5-3 victory on spot-kicks.
