Memorial Garden wins prestigious award

Kilmarnock Football Club’s memorial garden won a prestigious award recently.

Our garden, A lasting legacy for the Kilmarnock FC players who made the ultimate sacrifice in two World Wars, opened in 2021 and has been a prominent part of our stadium footprint since.

We received word of a nomination for the category of ‘Satellite Garden with Memorial’ at the 2024 Best Kept War Memorial competition thanks to Kilmarnock’s branch of the British Royal Legion Scotland.

We were then notified of our victory in the category as the presentation took place at New Haig House with Robert Aldridge, the Rt Hon Lord Provost of Edinburgh and David Boe, National Chairman of Legion Scotland presenting the awards.

Club Ambassador Ray Montgomerie and East Ayrshire Council leader Douglas Reid were delighted to accept the award.

Club Ambassador, Ray Montgomerie said: “We were delighted to find out that we’d won this award, a lot of hard work goes into the garden.

“It’s the first time a football club has won an award like this as far as I’m aware so it is a huge honour, a big thanks goes to Stewart Finlay at the British Legion for nominating us.

“I would also like to thank East Ayrshire Council for everything they’ve done in regards to the garden, it’s a great thing for the community.

“Huge thanks also goes to both Ayrshire Granite and Unlimited Landscape Maintenance for looking after the garden and keeping it looking great.

“Thanks also goes to Thomson Hunter and Ayrshire Memorials.

“The memorial garden is something we are all very proud of here at Kilmarnock FC.”
