Match report: Celtic 2-1 Kilmarnock

Kilmarnock were knocked out the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup by Celtic in a narrow 2-1 defeat.

Celtic had a golden opportunity after just 20 seconds when Nicolas Kuhn was through on goal, Robby McCrorie did well to stop the one-on-one – but he was injured in the process and was forced off due to a head knock as Kieran O’Hara replaced him.

Fraser Murray almost grabbed an early opener with a free-kick from 25 yards, he beat Kasper Schmeichel but the crossbar denied him.

The hosts took the lead after 12 minutes as Callum McGregor smashed home an effort from long range.

Kyogo Furuhashi had a great chance in the 19th minute as he ended up through on goal, the goal was at his mercy but he didn’t bend the effort well enough to score as it flashed wide.

Reo Hatate looked sure to score just before the half-hour mark as he latched on to a cross five yards out, but he somehow blazed it over the crossbar.

Killie then equalised right before half-time as Bobby Wales fired home from close range, with an effort too powerful for Celtic’s Danish international goalkeeper to stop.

Celtic got themselves ahead in the 70th minute as Daizen Maeda finished well from inside the area.

In the immediate moments after the goal, the hosts had another good couple of chances but both the crossbar and O’Hara denied the opportunities.
