Hundreds ‘thrive’ during October Holidays at BBSP Rugby Park

The Killie Community’s October Holiday Programme welcomed 119 young people to Rugby Park for a week packed with football, sport and plenty of fun.

With just one week of school holidays in East Ayrshire this October, our team made every day count. Young people took part in football coaching and multi-sports sessions all week, and everyone was properly fuelled along the way, with 435 healthy lunches served plus breakfast and fresh fruit every single day.

  • 119 young people
  • 435 healthy lunches
  • Breakfast and fresh fruit provided every day

When the rain came down on the wettest day of the week, our youngest participants had an idea of their own. They asked if the Astro Room could become a cinema for the day. With a high-powered projector and a few rearranged seats, that’s exactly what it became.

Jordan Allison, Head of Charity at The Killie Community, said:

“Every school holiday we see how much a week like this means to young people and their families. For some it’s the chance to play football with their pals every day. For others it’s knowing there’s a good breakfast and a healthy lunch waiting for them. We want every young person in Ayrshire to have a holiday they’ll remember, whatever their family’s circumstances. A huge thank you to our coaches, volunteers and the funders who made it all possible.”

Free spaces on the programme were funded by the Scottish FA’s Extra Time programme and by local businesspeople who stepped up to support young people in their community:

Jim Gemmell, Gemmell’s Van Sales; Conor Bowie, Carters Law; Andrew Wilson, AW Landscapes; Ryan Wilson, Wilson Funeral Services; Kenny Stuart, KGS Office Supplies; Andi Roy, MacKay Corporate Insurance; Andrea McAdam, Fisher Direct Furniture. Their support means cost is never a barrier to a young person joining in.

Funding a free space on one of our holiday programmes is one of the most direct ways a local business can make a difference to young people in Ayrshire. To find out how you can get involved, email team@killiecommunity.co.uk or call 01563 597869.
