Match Preview: Motherwell (A)

William Hill Scottish Premiership – Gameweek 23

Saturday 24th – January – 3:00pm | Fir Park, Motherwell

Last Time Out: Killie

Kilmarnock exited the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup following a narrow 2–1 defeat to Dundee, despite a spirited and largely encouraging performance. After an early scare that was superbly cleared off the line by Ethan Schilte-Brown, Killie took a deserved lead when Dom Thompson fired an outstanding low volley in off both posts after 12 minutes. The Rugby Park side continued to show ambition, with Yan Dhanda and Cameron Congreve both going close from distance, while Ashley Hay struck the crossbar early in the second half. Dundee levelled on 69 minutes, and despite Kilmarnock continuing to compete bravely, even after the visitors were reduced to ten men late on, a stoppage-time goal swung the tie the away side’s way, bringing an end to Killie’s cup run.

Last Time Out: Motherwell

Motherwell progressed to the fifth round of the Scottish Cup with a hard-fought 1–0 win over a stubborn Ross County at Fir Park, extending their impressive home defensive run with an eighth consecutive clean sheet. Despite dominating possession and pinning the Championship side deep for long spells, the Steelmen struggled to break down a well-organised County defence, with chances limited in a cagey first half. The breakthrough finally came on 62 minutes when Tawanda Maswanhise applied a decisive touch to Lukas Fadinger’s goal bound effort to net his 15th goal of the season. Ross County threatened late on, but goalkeeper Matty Connelly produced a vital save in the closing minutes to preserve the lead and ensure Jens Berthel Askou’s side secured safe passage to the next round.
