Matchzone: Rossvale (H)


Kilmarnock Women secured a crucial comeback victory at home to Rossvale on Sunday afternoon which saw them stay 2nd place in SWPL2, written by David McLaughlin.

Kilmarnock started the game very brightly at Rugby Park, dominating early possession, creating a couple of opportunities on goal.

In the 4th minute, against the run of play, Rossvale were awarded a penalty, with Olivia Foulds stepping up to face Holly Kerrigan. Foulds calmly sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 1-0 to the away team, providing an early setback for Kilmarnock.

After conceding the goal, Kilmarnock had sustained pressure, which eventually told in the 24th minute, when Cara Gray converted for Jim Chapman’s side to bring the sides equal.

Kilmarnock were now applying plenty of pressure to complete the comeback. Before half-time, captain Abby Robinson gets on the scoresheet to give Kilmarnock a 2-1 lead at the break.

At the start of the second half, Rossvale had several counter attacks, with one attempt being smashed off the crossbar, but were unable to convert their chances.

Kilmarnock eventually re-gained control of the game, shortly afterwards Kilmarnock increased their lead to 3-1. A brace for captain Robinson, the goal came from 15 yards out, which found the bottom corner.

Shortly after, it was 4-1 to Kilmarnock. A corner was played deep into the left-hand side of the box, it was retrieved by Mia Scott, who put a low cross back into the box, the ball found its way to centre–half Reese McCulloch to tap-in the fourth.

Kilmarnock Manager Jim Chapman spoke to our media team after the game saying he was really “pleased with the resilience that the team showed after the early setback.”

Next up for Kilmarnock is an away game at Gartcairn, before returning home to Rugby Park for their highly anticipated top of the table clash with Hamilton Academical on Sunday, November 3rd.
